Top three shocking statistics

  1. In 2014 the proportion of UK black staff who were professors was 4%- lower than for any other ethnic group.
  2. 5.8% of UK professors were BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) men and 1.3% women (a gap of 4.5%).[1]
  3. In the University of Essex, only 1% of Professors are Black/Black British.

Face to a name

Further to the recent suggestion to add your picture to your email account, my initial reaction was fear – I absolutely hate having my photo taken and the thought of sharing it with everyone was daunting. However, I decided to go for it and I have had some really positive feedback – not on my ugly mug but as a communication tool.

There are endless ways you can connect with others as highlighted previously, and online, social or virtual networking is fast becoming the norm in the professional and academic environment.
