Regular breaks

Regular breaks away from your workstation and throughout your working day are good for you. They say a change is as good as a rest! Also, taking regular breaks could also improve your health and well-being. Here are six simple ideas to help you break up the day:

  1. Spend too much time in front of the computer? Try Workrave. The program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks and restricts you to your daily limit. It allows you to programme when want breaks away from your computer.
  2. We have the beautiful parkland, sometimes beautiful weather, why not have a walking meeting? The following TED Talk provides a quick introduction to the many benefits of walking meetings.

  1. Plan your breaks, and if your breaks are planned make sure you take them. You should have enough time to wash your hands or change clothes, for example, before and after your break if it’s necessary for your health and safety.
  2. Talk with your team about having a fixed break in the morning, the afternoon or both. This could be a great opportunity to network and catch up.
  3. Lucky enough to have a departmental common room? Use it to take five and catch up on reading, emails or non-confidential meetings away from the desk.
  4. Instead of emailing go and speak to people instead. Face to face interactions can make for better working relationships and gets you out and about.
