Essex graduate Gabriella Emmanuel has turned a six-month placement into becoming a Partner and Marketing Director of a company.

Gabriella was a second year Marketing student when she secured a six-month placement with recruitment consultancy Success Recruit as a Marketing Assistant. Success Recruit’s Director was so pleased with Gabriella’s work, that she asked her if she wanted to continue her employment with them throughout her final year. Upon graduating, Success Recruit announced that they were setting up a new venture, Success Marketing, and asked Gabriella to be Partner and a Director.

Having graduated with a First, Gabriella believes that Essex Interns played a huge role in her achievements. “It not only helped me with my time management skills, but it introduced me to the professional work environment,” she said. “The benefits were endless, including the knowledge I gained which helped me with my coursework.”

She added: “I think that uni sometimes becomes a bubble, and you can get so caught up in being a student that you forget to think long-term. It was good to get out of that bubble and take part in experiences that would help benefit my future. The experience definitely worked both ways, as it was great to be able to use what I was learning in class in my internship.”

The Essex Interns scheme, run by the Employability and Careers Centre, creates paid internship opportunities that are exclusively for Essex students and graduates. Undertaking an internship can help build confidence, develop workplace skills and substantially boost employment prospects.

Many Essex graduate interns have also gone on to secure good permanent graduate roles with their internship employer.

During her internship, Gabriella experienced a varied and vigorous workload. “I managed Success Recruit’s social media platforms, wrote newsletters, co-ordinated events, and represented the company at networking events. I was given a lot of autonomy during my internship, which was beneficial as I do a lot of the same things in my job now.”

Gabriella believes that the Essex Interns scheme is an opportunity everyone should take part in. “I strongly encourage students to make good use of the programme. The University invests in more than lectures; they invest in the students’ future. Essex Interns is part of that investment.”

The day was attended by a host of graduate employers from Royal Mail to the Royal Navy and from Enterprise Rent-a-Car to BT – all of whom had great advice on how to create a good impression and get yourself on the fast track to a great career.

One piece of advice that many of the employers gave was to come prepared. Make sure you do your homework, find out about the companies beforehand and think about what you can bring to that company.  Have your CV prepared and ready, show your character and your enthusiasm and you could make that great lasting first impression that helps you get a great job or internship.

Many of the employers represented were keen to share their top tips for success on video – so hear from them now on our Vimeo channel.
