Professor Vasilios Ioakimidis was among the keynote speakers at the  Global Social Work & Social Development Conference in Dublin (3-7 July). The conference, attended by more than 2,500 delegates from all over the world, was the largest social work event internationally.

Other keynote speakers included the former President of the Republic of Ireland Mary Robinson and the Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, Cindy Blackstock.

In his keynote presentation, Professor Vasilios Ioakimidis explored social work’s troubled political past and challenged the use of Kantian Ethics as a canon for the profession. He proposed a transformative Ethics of Reconciliation which includes people and communities affected by state violence and social work’s troubled past.

The organisers created a poster summarising his speech
