Professor Francisco Sepulveda PIL: Tue 29 May 2018 at the University of Essex

Filed under: Southend Bulletin — Danielle Karanicholas @ 8:49 am

Date: Tuesday 29 May

Time: 6pm

Venue: LTB 10, Lecture Theatre Building, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester, CO4 3SQ

Speaker: Professor Francisco Sepulveda, School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering

Title: Of brains and pulses: conversations with the nervous system

Synopsis: Brain interfaces have come of age, albeit more so in fiction than in reality.  Whilst as a research community we have had relative success in creating technology to communicate directly with the brain and other parts of the nervous system, huge challenges remain. Professor Sepulveda will discuss the challenges in the context of clinical solutions, assistive technology, and general use as well, with a focus on his teams’ work throughout the years.  The short and long-term future of the field will also be discussed, with special emphasis on the ethical issues involved.

Lecture starts at 6pm followed by a drinks reception from 7.15pm.  Free admission and open to all.

We would be happy to arrange transport to/from Southend/Colchester for students and staff at our Southend campus who may like to attend.  Please e-mail me if you would be interested in transport, which I would anticipate would leave Southend at 3.30pm in order to arrive at Colchester in plenty of time.

Bakers Wanted for HARP24

Filed under: Southend Bulletin — Danielle Karanicholas @ 5:46 am

HARP is looking for local bakers to help provide cakes to support the HARP24 relay challenge (http://www.harp24.org.uk/) on 23 June 2018.   Over 300 runners will be taking part and HARP provide tea and cakes during the event so they’re looking for bakers to supply cakes.  This event raises much needed funds for the local homeless of Southend.    If you’d like to help out contact Lisa Walton (lisa.walton@harpsouthend.org.uk).
