Thank you from Linkoping

Filed under: Event,Promotional Event — Alex ONeill @ 10:02 am

We had a very interesting visit last week – it was great to meet some new colleagues from Linkoping University and they were very interested and impressed with our setup here at Essex. Included in our demonstration was:

  • Our Listen Again lecture capture service
  • Moodle and EVS (Electronic Voting Systems)
  • The new teaching spaces at The Forum in Southend, which was a talk given to us by Matt Softly in Southend over our remote lecture screens
  • FASer and the MEFE project
  • The Limehouse and the Orangery
  • Some robotic research from CSEE
  • An overview of the University strategy on technology enhanced learning, given by Richard Murphy and Jane Wright
  • The student view of elearning at Essex from James Potter

It’s amazing how much variety we have here that you don’t realise until you amalgamate it all into one day!

Anyway, a great time was had by all and I think the Swedish visitors definitely got what they needed out of the day. We got thank yous from the VC, who we met at the visit, and from the Leadership Foundation who had organised it. Looks like we left a good impression!

A visit from Sweden

Filed under: Event,Promotional Event — Alex ONeill @ 12:46 pm

Next week, the University will be hosting a visit from a team of senior managers and academics from Linkoping University in Sweden.

This has been organised through the Changing the Learning Landscape programme. The Swedish university are very interested in our MEFE project and want to know more about it as well as hearing more generally about how ISS deliver our IT infrastructure and the teaching in our Computer Science and Electronic Engineering department.

We will be providing two half days of talks, lunches and networking sessions, so hopefully they will feel welcome at Essex and also learn plenty while they are here.

I will update the blog next week to let you know how it went!

Welcome Richard Lerwill – the technical developer for the Making Electronic Feedback Effective (MEFE) project

Richard will be working full-time on the technical developments for the MEFE  project. Richard will be working on a .Net 4.0 platform using C# predominately using Visual Studio.

A little bit about Richard in his own words…

Hello everyone, my name is Richard and I have recently joined the Learning Technology Team, as a software developer.

Having been a software developer for more years than I care to remember, I have previously worked on e-commerce websites such as, travel website, events management company and language school, where I was involved in the installation and maintenance of the Moodle e-Learning software.

So far in my three weeks here, I’ve been impressed by the facilities in the University campus and everyone I have met has been extremely welcoming.

Over the course of the next twelve months I have been given the responsibility of developing the Online Coursework Submission system (OCS).  Already enabling students to upload and watermark coursework, I will be developing the system to submit work for plagiarism checking and most importantly to improve the two way communication between staff and student with various marking and feedback options.

I’m looking forward to meeting you over the next twelve months.

Richard Lerwill.
