The scheduled work was completed by 0715. Full internet access for any devices at the Loughton campus should now be operating normally again.

There will be a number of short disruptions to Internet connectivity at the Loughton campus between 0600 and 0700 on Tuesday 23rd October 2017. Each disruption should last for no longer than a minute.

If you do happen to be working at a computer at the Loughton campus (all buildings) during this time, you may find that any access to Internet based resources such as email, webpages etc occasionally slower than usual. ‘Krack’ wifi security weakness

Filed under: Network, Security, Wi-Fi — Sara Stock @ 4:44 pm

You may have heard about the Krack wifi security flaw in the news this week. Researchers  have discovered a flaw in the WPA2 security protocol that may mean snoopers could steal your data when you connect to a wifi network.

So what does Krack mean for you?

  • There is no immediate threat to the University or to you, when you are using our wifi network.
  • If you use a mobile device then, as ever, it’s best to ensure that you keep it fully updated to ensure you have the latest security patches to protect it. This is best practice as set out in our mobile device guidelines.
  • IT Services will continue to monitor the situation and provide further  advice as necessary.

As with any other IT concerns, report any unexpected behaviour to the IT Helpdesk, and they will advise you.

Update 15:20

The Jisc network has suffered a further loss of connectivity which is affecting the University’s internet access. For regular updates about this incident see Jisc’s Twitter:

More information to follow.

Original alert 11:28

Over the last hour or so you may have noticed a problem accessing the internet and some websites. This was due to a loss of service on the Janet network - the UK’s academic and research network the University connects to.

Janet have informed us they are seeing an improvement in connectivity and continue to monitor the situation closely.

If you’re still experiencing network problems, contact the IT Helpdesk.

[Resolved] Problem with some IT services due to earlier University power issue

Filed under: Network, Wi-Fi, [Resolved], [Service Alert] — Dan Jolly @ 4:05 pm

Some IT services that rely on the network were temporarily unavailable this afternoon. This was due to an issue with the University’s main power supply which affected some of our core network equipment.

We believe the issue is now under control, however IT Services staff continue to monitor the situation closely.

Please restart your computer if you experience any residual problems.

More information to follow if any problems return.

The University of Essex will moderate comments and there will be a delay before any posts appear.

Service failure

Filed under: Email, Office 365, Telephone, Wi-Fi, [Resolved], [Service Alert] — Bret Giddings @ 3:18 am

[Update: 16:35]

The remaining issues (Telephony and Conference Wi-fi) have been resolved and a full service restored.

[Update: 15:10]

We have staff working on and off campus. Some equipment that failed as a result of the power difficulties overnight is being switched out and once this has been completed, we’ll review the still outstanding issues and provide an update.

[Update: 12:00]

ListenAgain was returned to service at 11:45

[Update: 11:15]

All services are assessed as operating normally with the exception of:

  • Telephony: Incoming calls to the University can’t be answered (all campuses). Outgoing calls unaffected. For incoming calls, the call ID may be visible and you should be able to ring back.
  • Conference Wi-Fi service (EventEssex) is unavailable.
  • ListenAgain is unavailable.
  • There is a secondary issue unrelated to datacentre power affecting access to email using Outlook and on some mobile clients. However, it should be possible to access email using Webmail at

Next update: 15:00

[Update: 0430]

The problems affecting the home directories are mostly fixed. They should all be fully returned to service by 05:00

One of the University Datacentres lost power earlier today (18 Feb 2017), we believe as a result of a faulty environmental censor.

This resulted in the loss of many central IT facilities. Staff were onsite by 00:30 and most services were restored by 02:00. Some are still not available and will be worked on in due course.

Known issues at present are:

Moodle unavailable

Some home directories unavailable.

More information will be posted in due course.

The University of Essex will moderate comments and there will be a delay before any posts appear.
