[Resolved] Problem with SharePoint Office Web Apps Displaying Word/PDF/Excel Files

Filed under: SharePoint, [Resolved], [Service Alert] — Kyle Cooke @ 2:15 pm

UPDATE 13:35pm, 20 September 2019

Issue traced to faulty load balancer configuration. Permanent fix now enabled. Workaround has been removed. Steps are also being taken to ensure no future reoccurrence of the issue.
This issue is now closed.

UPDATE 09:10am, 19 September 2019

There is a workaround in place on the Load Balancer service which means that SharePoint service users should now be able to access and preview Word/Excel/PDF files.
This is a temporary fix however, and the underlying cause is still being sought.
Services affected: sp.essex.ac.uk, edrm.essex.ac.uk.

UPDATE 16:52pm, 18 September 2019

With regret, the issue has reoccurred. Further investigations are on-going.
Issue affects SharePoint hover panel previews of Word/Excel/PDF files, and also opening Word/Excel/PDF files, stored in SharePoint, in a web browser. Please be assured that no data has been lost. We are just experiencing a failure with data retrieval through the Office Web Apps Service.
Services affected: sp.essex.ac.uk, edrm.essex.ac.uk.

UPDATE 14:48pm, 18 September 2019

The issue was traced to a misconfigured SSL certificate on the Load Balancer service for SharePoint. The setting has been corrected, and we now believe full service to be restored.
Any user still experiencing issues should close their web browser and re-open it and re-try accessing the file, before reporting it to the SharePoint Team (sphelp@essex.ac.uk).
Thank you.

[Service Alert] Possible disruption to SharePoint Services for planned maintenance: Friday 21st December 2018

Filed under: SharePoint, [Resolved], [Service Alert] — Sharon Steeples @ 4:23 pm

UPDATE: 12.22PM Friday 21 December

The scheduled maintenance work is now complete.
Thank you to our users for their patience.

SharePoint Team

There is a possibility that users may experience a couple of brief disruptions to SharePoint Services this Friday (21st December 2018) – morning/early afternoon.

This is to accommodate some essential maintenance work to prepare the core services of ECF, ESF, AOS, and PG/UG EAF to be compatible with the incoming 2019 calendar year.

During the maintenance work, we do not anticipate any prolonged period of service outage – only a few minutes on any occasion.

Services affected include:

  • All sites hosted in the https://edrm.essex.ac.uk domain (PG EAF, UG EAF, ESF, Agent Online Services, Reporting)
  • All sites hosted in the https://sp.essex.ac.uk domain
  • All personal mysites (and OneDrives) hosted in the https://mysite.essex.ac.uk domain

We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause. However, it is anticipated that the impact on users, with this period being in the lead-up to the Christmas vacation, will be minimal.

Notification will be made to users when the period of maintenance is complete.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all our users.

Scheduled Maintenance: PG EAF and UG EAF sites and forms, Tuesday 20 November 5pm-7pm

Filed under: SharePoint, [Resolved], [Service Alert] — Sharon Steeples @ 11:20 am

In order to roll-out a software upgrade to our workflow forms engine (Collagen), the SharePoint Team will be undertaking essential maintenance on the SharePoint PG EAF and UG EAF sites, and the Admissions forms used by these sites, between 5pm and 7pm this evening (Tuesday 20 November 2018).

Collagen Engine runs UG/PG Decision Review Forms, and the PG Dean Approval Form.

Staff should not attempt to use, or create, any forms during the maintenance period, as any changes made whilst the roll-out is happening will be lost.

Changes will also be made which affect the task screens within UG EAF and PG EAF, so anyone using those during the roll-out will have a sub-optimal experience.
