[Service Alert] Working from home via OpenVPN – automatic power on feature disabled

Filed under: Network, [Resolved], [Service Alert] — Dan Jolly @ 4:56 pm

Update

To OpenVPN users

IT Services staff have completed patching all affected computers to fix the security vulnerability with the remote power-on feature used with OpenVPN.

The feature is now re-enabled, so you don’t need to leave your office computer switched on if you plan to use OpenVPN from home.

Thank you for your patience with this issue.

Original alert

To OpenVPN users,

If you intend to work from home and wish to access your work PC via OpenVPN, you must leave it switched on and running – please do not switch it off.

We’ve been made aware of a serious security vulnerability in the automatic power on feature utilised by many PCs and therefore in order to safeguard the University’s IT operation we have decided to follow the recommendation to disable this feature until a fix is available.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and will update you as soon as we know more.

The University of Essex will moderate comments and there will be a delay before any posts appear.
