[Service Alert] [Resolved] Systems issues affecting on-site internet access

There was a problem with the network infrastructure this morning that may have stopped you connecting to the VPN. The VPN connection is working now but this problem helped identify an issue with our internal systems.

If you’re on-campus or connected to your PC via VPN you may experience internet connection issues, our engineers are currently working to resolve this now.

This post will be updated when we have more information.

As always, thanks for your patience while we get this fixed.

Update 11:05 6 June 2020

Our engineers have now resolved this issue, sorry for any trouble this may have caused.

The University of Essex will moderate comments and there will be a delay before any posts appear.

We’re aware that some staff are having trouble connecting or maintaining a connection to their computer on campus using remote desktop.

If this problem is affecting you please report it to the IT Helpdesk  (https://www.essex.ac.uk/staff/it-services/it-helpdesk).

One workaround is to use the University’s Virtual Desktop service  (https://www.essex.ac.uk/staff/it-services/virtual-desktop).

Also check our working remotely guidance (https://www.essex.ac.uk/staff/it-services/working-remotely-from-home-or-off-campus)  as many of our services are accessible without using VPN and remote desktop.

Network problems Physics building East and issues affecting remote access to work PCs

If you were not aware there was a electrical power surge that affected the Colchester area last week Wednesday 20th May.

This has caused many PCs and equipment at the University to enter a partially faulty state requiring a power cycle to be fully restored which IT Solutions has been working diligently to do so.

Many areas of the network have been brought up to 100% however one area of the East side of the Physics building failed completely this morning.

[Updated] Network problems on Colchester Campus

Update – 14:52

The Networks team continue to investigate reports of localised network connection problems on the Colchester Campus. Service has been restored in several locations including the Silberrad Centre and Lab D.

This may affect people logging into computers on campus or trying to connect to their PC over VPN. Please report any connection problems to the IT Helpdesk –  https://www.essex.ac.uk/student/it-services/it-helpdesk.
