[Service Alert] We are making improvements to Panopto and Listen Again

Planned work

Listen Again (https://listenagain.essex.ac.uk/) and Panopto (https://panopto.essex.ac.uk/) will be unavailable on Thursday 23 July and Friday 24 July so that we can upgrade to the latest version of Panopto. We anticipate the work will take two days to complete, but we’ll update you here as soon as it’s done.

The new version of Panopto brings several useful features, including:

  • Machine transcription of new recordings;
  • In-browser video recording;
  • Recycle bin to recover deleted recordings;
  • Improved analytics.

We are sorry that you will be unable to access the above services during this time. Any teaching events taking place in Zoom during this period will be imported into Listen Again and Panopto once they are back up and running.

The planned works have now been completed successfully. We apologise for the overrun and any inconvenience caused.

Update, 11:30:

Listen Again and Panopto have now largely been returned to service. However, recordings from 2018/19 and earlier are currently unavailable. We will update this post when works are complete.

Planned work:

Listen Again (https://listenagain.essex.ac.uk/) and Panopto (https://panopto.essex.ac.uk/) will be unavailable on the morning of Tuesday 7 July so that we can prepare for a new version of Panopto. We anticipate the work will take the whole morning to complete, but we’ll update you here as soon as it’s done.

[Service Alert] [Resolved] Panopto and Listen Again upgrade

Update 30 July, 9:30am:

The Panopto upgrade is now complete, both it and Listen Again have been returned to service.

Note that both services are still considered at risk until Wednesday 31 July:

Update 4:18pm:

The Panopto upgrade has taken longer than expected due to the size of our database.

We now expect to return Listen Again to service by 5pm on Tuesday 30 July.

The following services will be unavailable between 10am and 4pm on Monday 29 July, and then considered at risk until Wednesday 31 July:

  • Listen Again (https://listenagain.essex.ac.uk/)
  • Panopto (https://panopto.essex.ac.uk/)

This is so that we can carry out essential maintenance, upgrading Panopto to the latest version. This new version includes a number of changes, but most usefully a recycle bin, so that accdeintally deleted recordings can be recovered.

[Service Alert] [Resolved] Problems accessing web based services

Update 11:45am

This problem was traced to a configuration issue in some replacement hardware. It has now been resolved, and users should be able to access the services listed below.

Update 11:00am

A fix has been put in place so users can access these services again.

We are continuing to monitor these services.

We are currently investigating an issue affecting our web based services.

Affected services included:

  • Some University webpages (mainly online forms and secure pages)
  • Moodle
  • Listen Again
  • FASer
  • Sharepoint
  • Other web-based services

[Service Alert] Essential maintenance work to IT systems this weekend

UPDATE: 15:05PM Saturday 5 January

The scheduled maintenance work is now complete.
Thank you to our users for their patience.


IT Services will be performing an essential system upgrade between 9am and 5pm on Saturday 5 January 2019.

During this time, many services will be unavailable. This includes but is not limited to:

  • ESIS and attendant student and applicant information systems
  • AppPortal and Web Clearing
  • MyEssex
  • Timetables
  • ESF, EAF and ECF on SharePoint
  • The Accommodation booking systems
  • The PocketEssex App
  • FASER and Listen Again

This upgrade is necessary to prepare our systems for the next academic year.

Work has been undertaken to mitigate the impact of this upgrade, but if you have any concerns please contact Richard Martin.
