Christmas 2018 opening hours for IT labs and spaces

Colchester Campus

From 3pm Friday 21 December 2018 to 8am Wednesday 2 January 2019:

  • the Silberrad Learning Hub, IT Labs A, C, D, G and N will be open 24hrs.
  • The Orangery will be opened ‘on request’ to the Information Desk, between the hours of 9am – 10pm each day.
  • The Limehouse and all other IT services labs will be closed.
  • The Library PG reading room and UG Large Reading Room will be open 24 hours throughout.

This is with the exception of the period 7pm 31 December 2018 until 7am 1 January 2019 when all IT services labs, Silberrad Learning Hub, the Orangery and the Limehouse will be closed.

Southend Campus

Gateway Building (Lab 1, Lab 2, Mac Lab)

  • Access to the Gateway Building between 22 December and 31 December will be by student/staff card access only
  • Closed on Christmas Day (25 December), Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year’s Day (1 January)
  • Closes at 5pm on Christmas Eve (24 December) and New Year’s Eve (31 December)

Clifftown Studios (PC Lab)

  • Closed between 22 December and New Year’s Day (1 January)

The Forum (Open Study Space, Reading Space, Group Pods)

  • 24/7 access to the 1st Floor Library and 2nd Floor Learning hub for students/staff is available throughout the Christmas break, and is by card via the North access (SMACS) door whenever the Forum’s main entrance is closed
  • The Forum’s main entrance is closed on Christmas Eve (24 December), Christmas Day (25 December), Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year’s Day (1 January)
  • The Forum’s main entrance closes at 5pm on New Year’s Eve (31 December)

[Resolved] Problems launching software in the Computing Labs

This issue has now been resolved. If you are still having trouble launching software from shortcuts on the desktop please contact the IT Helpdesk (it.desk@essex.ac.uk) or use launch the software using the Essex Software Hub as described in the post below.

Staff and students using the computers in the Computing Labs and open access areas may find that many of the software application shortcuts do not open the software and will produce an error. We are currently looking into this issue and hope to have a fix soon.

In the meantime, if you need to access any of the software on the Lab computers you can do so by launching them directly from the Essex Software Hub – https://software.essex.ac.uk (simply find the icon of the application you wish to run and click the Launch button).

We will post an update as soon as this issue has been resolved.

The Essex Software Hub applications service is experiencing issues

This issue has now been resolved. If you are still experiencing issues with launching applications from the Essex Software Hub please contact the IT Helpdesk.

We are currently experiencing issues with software provision via the Essex Software Hub (AppsAnywhere) service. This will affect many computers on campus and will result in software applications not launching correctly and/or crashing. IT Services staff have been in contact with our support partners for this service and hope to have a resolution to this issue as soon as possible.

[Service Alert][Resolved]Home drive server unavailable

One of the servers that provides M: drives (isslx112) was unavailable between 06:45 Sunday 11th November until 08:45 Monday 12th November.

The cause of the issue is under investigation.

[Resolved] – Authentication failures on Linux servers

There was an issue today between 12:00 and 12:45 with authenticating on all IT Services Linux servers.  This will have disrupted services including M: drive access, delayed processing of email, OpenVPN access, and the UNIX compute servers.

We believe the issue has now been resolved.
