Moodle Upgrade

Moodle will be unavailable from 9am July 15th until no later than 5pm July 15th while we upgrade to the latest version and perform essential system maintenance.

Along with performance improvements, bugfixes, and security patches the latest version of Moodle also introduces an improved user dashboard, group messaging, improved control over forums and accessibility improvements. The Moodle website has release notes for v3.6 and v3.7.

With this latest upgrade we will also be trialling the new updated Essex theme for Moodle, which reduces clutter on the page, makes functions for teachers more prominent to find and makes courses on the homepage easier to find. You can see a preview of the new theme on Moodle.

While the upgrade is ongoing, students who are studying for exams will be able to access their study resources by going to the Moodle Archive. We aim to add the 2018/19 archive the week before Moodle’s outage.

Between around 9:20 and 10:00 this morning there was an issue at the data center of one our service providers which led to some systems becoming temporarily unavailable. This would have included Moodle, Qualtrics, Talis, Lynda and some library services. This issue was fixed at around 10am.

Problems affecting External Network Connectivity Colchester Campus 11:03am

There was an issue today Wednesday 1st May at 11:03am which caused the Colchester campus to lose external network connectivity until 11:06am.  The actual service affecting period might have been a lot shorter as redundancies took affect.

Other campuses would likewise have been cut off from Colchester’s services.

This problem was caused by a router developing a memory fault which caused it to reboot.

The should be no further issues and we have put plans in place to replace the unit that has shown signs of a fault.

Problems accessing Library services

Update: The problems affecting logging into certain library systems have now been resolved.

We have received reports that there are currently intermittent issues with logging on to some library services, the cause of which is currently being looked into.

Further updates will be posted when more information is available.

[Service Alert] [Resolved] FASER not showing any modules

Note that there was a brief FASER outage between 16:50 and 17:10 on Tuesday 23 April 2019. This was caused by an expired system account.

Those who are still encountering issues are advised to clear their FASER cache, accessible via https://www1.essex.ac.uk/e-learning/tools/faser2/Student/Help/Settings
