[Service Alert] [Unresolved] Issues affecting FASER’s performance

Update 22 March:

We are seeing a significant number of deadlines and submissions today, which is having an impact on FASER and its annotation component. Students should be largely unaffected by this, but staff may encounter problems when attempting to annotate submissions.

 

Update 19 March:

This morning, FASER’s annotate component was migrated to faster hardware (SSD storage). We are still monitoring the impact of this, but initial tests are favourable.

 

Original message:

We apologise for the recent performance issues with FASER. Over the last few days, we have been monitoring the service and slowly narrowing down the root cause of the problems that people have been encountering. We are still working on this, but one of the issues identified relates to an update to a third-party component that we rely on to provide online annotation and document checking.

We have implemented various emergency fixes to lessen the impact of these performance problems, and are working to identify other root causes and develop fixes. This is being treated as a priority.

We will continue to keep this blog post updated with developments every few days, but we thank colleagues and students for their continued patience whilst we fully resolve the matter.

[Service Alert][Resolved] iTrent/ People Manager/ HR Organiser Maintenance – Monday 11 March 2019

Business Systems Team will be performing an essential system upgrade on Monday 11 March 2019. During this time the following services will be unavailable:

  • iTrent
  • HR Organiser
  • People Manager
  • Web Recruitment
  • External Examiner Nomination Portal

It is anticipated that the system will be unavailable for most of the working day, notification will be made to users once this is complete.

[Service alert] [Resolved] Issues with Annotate in FASER

Update Friday 08 March 12:00noon

This issue reappeared on the morning of the 08 March and was ultimately tracked to an undiagnosed disk issue.

Update 14:24

FASER has returned to normal service.

We will continue to monitor FASER’s performance over the next week.

Update 12:10pm

We’ve found an error with Annotates disk which we are working on fixing.

Similarly, an unexpected issue has occurred with the speed of FASER’s website – We are working on restoring functionality and will update you once this has been resolved.

  • Students uploading submissions to FASER assignments is showing errors that there are issues with converting your submission.
  • Staff are receiving errors when annotating work online

For students, please note this does not affect your submission, and your department will be able to access your uploaded file(s).

This is caused by the online annotation service used in faser.essex.ac.uk timing out.

We are looking into the problem currently, and hope to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.

[Service alert] [Resolved] Further issues with Annotate on FASER

This issue affected students from roughly 12:00noon on Sunday 03 March until 08:51am on Monday 04 March.

The root cause appears to be an unexpected code reversion over the weekend. We are still investigating why this happened.

Update 08:51 am:

The underlining issue has been been fixed for both staff and students.

Additionally, we have converted all outstanding submissions for online marking.

Students: If you still see the warning icon, FASER hasn’t retroactively removed the icon. Your department will be able to view and download submissions, and they should also be able to mark your work online.
