[Service Alert] Silent and dropped phone calls, SIP phone config problems 29/1/19

Information Update 30 January 2019; 12:30:

The cause of the problem has been resolved. Any SIP phone still experiencing issues can be rebooted. Please refer to these instructions.

Information Update; 20:00:

Engineers have restarted a critical service on the system which should have resolved most if not all reported problems.

If there are continuing issues to do with speed dial settings, missed call data, directory changes, screen display updates please email telephones@essex.ac.uk.

IT Services will continue to monitor the situation.

We have been receiving reports of SIP phone users experiencing a range of issues from dropped calls or silence when collecting a call to loss of configuration settings.

This has been reported to the system maintainer.

[Service Alert] Scheduled maintenance will temporarily prevent changes being made to the telephone system – 31 January 2019; 09:00 – 17:00

Original Alert:

We will be migrating the system administration tool to a new server, that will ensure our software support.

During this work we will only be able to make basic changes to extension number functionality e.g. dialing external numbers, swapping analogue extension number locations.

Complex tasks e.g. creating and emending groups, will be picked up the following day.

Please continue to make urgent requests to telephones@essex.ac.uk and we will respond as accurately as we can.

[Service Alert] [Resolved] Potential issues with logging onto FASER

FASER has now returned to full normal service.

FASER has returned to normal service. We will continue to monitor the service throughout the day.

The root cause was a process that sends feedback notifications had silently stopped. This process had been restarted yesterday lunchtime, causing FASER to clear its email backlog of ~70,000, directing users within the University to log into FASER at the same time. The high volume of users subsequently made FASER exceptionally slow.

The email backlog has since been cleared, however there may be peak times where FASER runs slowly throughout the day when users of the University log on in response to the feedback emails.

We are aware of the delay with users who are logging onto faser.essex.ac.uk

A large number of feedback emails were sent, which has resulted in a much higher volume of users.

We are monitoring FASER, and it should return to normal service shortly.

The IT Training Room has moved!

New location and facelift for IT Training Room

Building work is complete on the new IT Training Room (6.327) and it’s officially open for business. The room is located in the old Maths corridor and is kitted out even better than before.

Room features

We’ve upped the capacity to 14, added two 79″ touch screen LCD panels, a visualiser and a break-out space for brainstorming and collaborative working. The full list of features is as follows:

  • 14 learner PCs with dual monitors
  • 1 lecturer PC with dual monitors and lectern for anyone with an Essex.ac.uk account (externals will need a temp account, requests can be made through the helpdesk@essex.ac.uk.
  • Laptop loom, for connecting any laptop by HDMI or VGA and an audio cable for sound
  • Visualizer for displaying any paper or notes on screen
  • Two 79” wall-mounted touch screen LCD panels
  • Break-out space with wall mounted whiteboards for brainstorming and collaborative working
  • Air-conditioning (centrally controlled) and black out blinds
  • Catering table

The easiest way to get to the room is via Square 2 (behind Zest), take the lift up to level 6 and the room is on your right as you exit the lift. You can also get to it by going through the Estates corridor. For alternative routes check out findyourway.

Can I book the IT Training Room?

You can check availability and book the room for staff related learning via Outlook using the instructions below:

  1. In Outlook, create a new Meeting (Ctrl + Shift + Q).
  2. Click on Rooms…, search for IT Training Room (6.327), click on Rooms > OK.
  3. Use Scheduling Assistant to select an available timeslot.
  4. Click Appointment, then in the Subject field write your name and what the room will be used for eg [Sally Swaine: Excel training]. You can also include the iTrent course code here if you have one, then press Send (Alt + S).
  5. You’ll receive an automatic message to say your booking is Tentative – this is NOT confirmation of your booking.
  6. IT Services will then respond to confirm or decline your request within 48 hours.

NB: All Learning Activities should be entered into iTrent so attendees can keep a record of their professional development. If you wish to advertise your learning event(s) via HR Organiser you will need to complete the iTrent Learning Request Form and submit to Learning and Development (ldev@essex.ac.uk). You’ll also need to attach 6.327 as a resource to your learning activity in iTrent after you’ve booked it through Outlook.

[Service Alert] Resolved: Problems with HR Organiser and People Manager
