[Service Alert] Severe disruption to IT services today

Further to the incident at 8:15 this morning the fault has now been rectified and IT Services (Networks) will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates as appropriate.

[Service Alert] Scheduled maintenance work affecting access to voicemail services – 22 March 2018

Information Update: 21 February 2018, 09:45:

A planning error means we published the wrong date for this work, it should have read 22 March 2018, between 06:00 and 08:00. The work will take place tomorrow.

Information Update: 28 February 2018, 15:15:

Due to the extreme weather conditions the improvement work has been postponed until 8 March 2018, between 06:00 and 08:00

The improvement work has now been rescheduled for 1 March 2018 between 06:00 and 08:00.

During  the work there will be no access to any voicemail services including:

  • taking messages
  • reviewing messages
  • recording greetings
  • changing account settings

Information Update: 23 January 2018, 10:30:

The improvement work started out on 16 January 2018 was aborted due to a problem with the software, that was discovered post installation. This problem had not been encountered before and is with the software designers. A resolution is expected after which we will attempt to complete the work again.

Voicemail services have been restored.

The work on the Voicemail system started as planned. Part of the process was to migrate a huge database of user details and voicemail messages from the old server to the new server. As this was a one time only event that had to precede the planned works there was no way of knowing how long this element would take. Due to this unforeseen circumstance it is likely the Voicemail system will be off line for a period during office hours.

We apologise for the disruption and inconvenience this will cause.

A temporary message alerting callers and requesting they try again later has been set up.

The supplier problems have been resolved. The improvement works on the Voicemail Service will take place on Tuesday 16th January between 06:00 to 08:00

Due to supplier problems this work has had to be postponed. Information on a revised schedule will be posted in due course.

[Service Alert] 30 Second Network Outage Monday 11th December 2017 18:00hrs

There will be 30 second network outage affecting around 50% of the Colchester Campus Monday 11th December 2017 at 6PM over a 10 minute window.  

Servers and services will also be affected for 30 seconds or less over this period.

 

This will be to perform some potentially disruptive actions on core equipment to resolve the intermittent DHCP network issue affecting some areas of the Colchester Campus.

 

After this timeframe if problems persist please restart your PC before contacting the IT Helpdesk for further instructions.

Christmas 2017 opening hours for IT labs and spaces

Colchester Campus

From 12pm on Thursday 21 December 2017 until 8am on Tuesday 2 January 2018:

  • the Silberrad Learning Hub and IT labs A, C, D,  G and N will be open 24hrs.
  • The Orangery will be opened ‘on request’ via the Information Desk between the hours of 9am to 10pm each day.
  • The Library PG reading room will be open 24 hours throughout.
  • The Limehouse and all other IT Services labs will be closed.

This is with the exception of the period 7pm 31st December 2017 until 7am 1st January 2018 when all IT services labs, Learning Hub, the Orangery and the Limehouse will be closed.

Southend Campus

Access to the Learning Hub during the following two periods will be via the North access (SMACS) door:

  • 6pm on Saturday 23 December 2017 re-opening on Wednesday 27 December 2017
  • 5pm on Sunday 31 December 2017 re-opening on Tuesday 2 January 2018

IT Lab 1, IT Lab 2, Student Common Room, E15 Mac Lab, and the rest of the Gateway Building will be closed to students and staff during the following two periods:

  • 5pm on Sunday 24 December 2017 re-opening on Wednesday 27 December 2017
  • 5pm on Sunday 31 December 2017 re-opening on Tuesday 2 January 2018

Clifftown IT Lab, and the rest of Clifftown Studios will be closed to students and staff during the following period:

  • 10pm on Friday 22 December 2017 re-opening on Tuesday 2 January 2018

[Service Alert] Intermittent network problems affecting some users

We have confirmation of which system is causing the intermittent DHCP network problem however our remedial action this morning did not fully resolve the issue.

With this confirmation we are moving any remaining services away from the affected system.

This is a brief but disruptive process that will occur at the end of the working day today around 18:00.

Further communication will be sent out regarding this.

If you experience network problems outside the period of the remedial work please contact the IT Helpdesk.
