LGBT+ Careers Event

LGBT+ Careers Event – an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion collaboration with the Essex LGBT+ Alliance, Employability and Careers and the Students’ Union.

This now annual event offers LGBT+ students and staff a chance to hear from LGBT+ staff and students and their experiences in finding a job and then how they managed to be authentic in the workplace.

A panel of LGBT+ speakers from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, Ford Motor Company Ltd,  Essex County Council, LGBT+ staff and students from UoE will give an insight into what it means to apply for a job as an LGBT+ person.   There will then be a session where delegates can ask the speakers questions in an informal setting.  Afternoon tea will then be available giving everyone the opportunity to network with peers and several employers from the Essex LGBT+ Alliance.

This event is aimed at all of the University community, not just LGBT+ staff and students as we realise that many staff and students have friends or family who are LGBT+ and who may need advice and support on finding employment when they leave school or university.

Aurora – Leadership development programme for women

Aurora is the women-only leadership development programme developed by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education in the UK to help address the under-representation of women in senior posts in higher education.

The Aurora programme is targeted at those who identify as female up to senior lecturer level or professional services equivalent in a university or higher education college, ambitious for a career in the sector and interested in exploring leadership and management as one option for progression. It is designed to introduce key leadership topics and skills in 4 workshops (each x 1 day), complemented by networking, role models and guest speakers at each event. Further, on-going support is ensured through action learning (1 day scheduled as part of the programme), online resources and institutional level support including mentoring and institutional Aurora Champions.

In 2017-18, the University are committing to make available up to 5 funded places on the Aurora Programme commencing in London on 8 March 2018, with attendance on 4 further dates: 24 April 2018, 17 May 2018, 12 June 2018 and 5 July 2018.

Harassment Advisory Network Drop In sessions

The Harassment Advisory Network offers a confidential signposting service for staff, students and visitors who experience any kind of bullying or harassment, relating to, for example, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, race, religion, etc.

We are pleased to announce that our weekly Drop-In sessions, will commence on Tuesday 3 October from 1pm to 2pm in the Multi-Faith Chaplaincy, Room MFC 1. No appointment is necessary, just turn up. An adviser will be on duty to help ‘signpost’ you to routes to solutions and support.

Alternatively, you can make an appointment to speak to a Harassment Adviser by contacting the network by phone on 01206 874334 or through email at harass@essex.ac.uk. There is more information about the network on the Harassment page of our Equality and Diversity website.

If you believe that you have been the victim of a Hate Crime you can report that to the Hate Incident Reporting Centre via hirc@essex.ac.uk or directly to the police. Information on how to do this is on the Reporting Hate Crime page of our Equality and Diversity website.



STONEWALL WORKPLACE EQUALITY SURVEY 2018

Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index is the definitive benchmarking tool for employers to measure their progress on lesbian, gay, bi and trans inclusion in the workplace

As part of the University’s Stonewall Workplace Equality Index submission, Stonewall would like to invite you to take part in their employee survey. The information you provide is anonymous and completely confidential; it is not possible for individuals to be identified through their responses.

Stonewall aims to be as transparent as possible when processing data. We have outlined below how and why they use the data that you submit for analytical purposes:

  • Reporting, to your employer, average scores and trends on key indicators of inclusion in your workplace (where sample sizes are too small, only national, regional and sector trends will be shared with your employer)
  • Reporting national, regional and sector trends on LGBT inclusion in the workplace to be included in the Stonewall Top 100 report in January 2018 and associated publications

Are you a parent or have caring responsibilities?

Through the work of Athena SWAN, it has been identified that it is often harder for working parents and carers (primarily women), to attend conferences and networking events, which fall outside of their normal working pattern, due to additional costs.

The University is committed to learning and promotes staff engagement in maintaining and further developing knowledge, expertise, and skills, irrespective of role and career stage.

Whilst it’s recognised that caring costs are only one factor that could affect attendance at these events, the ‘Career Development Fund for Carers’, has been developed to help relieve the pressure in some part, by helping staff with the additional caring costs incurred.

In recognition of these findings, until 31 July 2018, each Faculty and Professional Services department will hold a budget to support Career Development Fund for Carers applications.

Applicants can make one claim per year, of up to £150 to help with additional caring costs incurred as a result of attending conferences, training or networking events. Funds will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Stonewall Leadership Programmes – apply for funding now!

To support the University’s commitment to promoting staff engagement in developing knowledge, expertise and skills irrespective of role and career stage, we are funding two places on each of Stonewall’s two LGBT* leadership programmes:

STONEWALL YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAMME 2017-18

We are looking for a diverse range of LGBT* staff of 18-25 years of age including those from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds and people who consider themselves to have a disability.

STONEWALL TWO-DAY LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME 2017-18

We are looking for a diverse range of senior level LGBT* staff including those from ethnic backgrounds, people of faith, disabled people, women and non-binary people and those at the intersections of these identities.

 

Further information on application criteria, including the University’s application form, can be found on the Equality and Diversity website.  The deadline for all applications is 5pm on Tuesday 29 August 2017.  

If you are successful in the University’s application process, you will then go forward to take part in Stonewall’s highly-competitive application process where you will be required to complete their online application with our support. If you are shortlisted to take your application further, you will be required to provide an up-to-date CV.  Places on the programme are therefore not guaranteed.

Leadership Foundation for Higher Education’s Diversifying Leadership programme

As part of the University’s commitment to increasing the diversity of staff at senior levels, the University has funded two places on the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education’s Diversifying Leadership programme designed to support black and minority ethnic (BAME) staff transition into leadership roles. The programme is aimed at early career BAME academics and professional services staff, up to and below senior lecturer level (or equivalent).

This year Ai Gooch and Kojo Koram were selected to attend the Diversifying leadership programme. Below is Ai’s experiences of the event and how it has impacted her.

Subject Librarian for Business and Law

‘’I am a Subject Librarian for Business and Law. I applied for this programme because I am fairly new in my position and I wanted to know more about leadership in the context of UK higher education. The programme has been intensive, but rewarding. The course combines a theoretical framework of leadership and practical exercises to develop skills. For example, we looked at leadership theories through different timelines and across the world to raise awareness of the variety in the concepts of leadership. I also discovered various concepts and approaches related to leadership – sponsorship, for example, is something I had never heard of but I now have two sponsors, who have been a fantastic encouragement to me. Practical exercises, on the other hand, provide opportunities to do things without worrying about failure and to receive feedback. Such examples include ‘elevator pitch’ and ‘active learning sets’. Another positive thing about the programme is to have an opportunity to work with BME staff from other institutions and share experiences. It is really encouraging to meet people who struggle and succeed in similar circumstances. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to progress.’’

Aurora: A Leadership Development Programme For Women

Aurora is a women-only leadership development programme created by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education in the UK. The aim of the programme is to help address the under-representation of women in senior posts in higher education.

The Aurora programme is targeted to all women up to senior lecturer level or professional services equivalent in a university or higher education college. The programme is aimed towards women who are ambitious for a career in the sector and interested in exploring leadership and management as an option for progression. It is designed to introduce fundamental leadership skills in 4 workshops (1 workshop = 1 day) with networking opportunities and guest speakers at each event. Furthermore, on-going support is ensured through action learning (1 day scheduled for this as part of the programme), online resources and institutional level support including mentoring and institutional Aurora Champions.

This year we have had five successful delegates’ cohorts, from left to right: Emma Appleton (Senior Financial Analyst), Dr Amanda K Chaplin (Post-Doctoral Researcher), Dr Victoria Nolan (Longitudinal Studies Project Manager), Dr Nadine Rossol (Senior Lecturer in Modern European History) and Dr Louise Marsland (Health Services Research Adviser and Lecturer).

 

In 2016-17, the University produced 5 funded places on the Aurora Programme which commenced in London on 8 March 2017, with attendance on 4 further dates: 29 March 2017, 26 April 2017, 24 May 2017 and 28 June 2017.

We were able to catch up with Dr Victoria Nolan on her success in the programme. She has kindly provided us with her experiences with Aurora.

Who are you?

I am the Project Manager for Understanding Society (the UK Household Longitudinal Study), based at the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Essex. My role involves project planning, coordinating, tracking and reporting across the eight directorates and a range of other subprojects that make up the Study, and liaising with project stakeholders, funders and data users. I also have line management responsibility for two members of the Understanding Society team.

What’s your view of Aurora?

Aurora is an excellent programme for developing leadership and management skills, and for learning about your personal strengths and weaknesses as a leader and skills that can be developed further. Aurora is helping me to identify ways of improving my workplace behaviour to develop into a better leader, which is helpful both now, and as my role may develop in the future.

Aurora is also helpful for networking and meeting colleagues from around the University, and also from other universities across the country. We are learning a lot from each other and are making connections which will endure after the course itself has finished.

How is Aurora helping you?

The Aurora programme is really helping me to develop leadership skills that I can put into practice in my day-to-day work. I am learning about my identity in the workplace, techniques for “being heard”, different styles of leadership, and developing a presence within the team. We have gone on to learn about managing credibility, profile and influence, and building effective networks. We are developing “Action Learning” techniques to identify and find ways of resolving challenges that we face at work.

What does Aurora bring to the table? Why should people do it?

Aurora is useful as it is provided externally to the University hence, enables networking with a broader range of people, but is bounded by being focussed on higher education professionals, so all the delegates share fairly common experiences. The training days are well-structured with a combination of presentations from successful female role models within the industry, and group discussions where delegates can share their experiences and discuss challenges and possible solutions.

I would recommend that people apply for the Aurora scheme as it is a well-structured, interesting and useful course which covers a broad range of skills, and provides advice and guidance for better understanding your workplace self and gives you the tools to develop your leadership skills further in the future.

What does it mean to be a Successful Aurora Delegate?

I was very pleased to be chosen to take part in the Aurora programme. It is encouraging to be recognised as someone with future potential and I am pleased to be given the opportunity to develop my skills further within the context of this programme. Once the programme is finished I am certain I will have developed personally and been able to take some essential leadership skills back to the workplace.
