Staff question of the month for October 2015WEAREESSEX

This month we’re interested in your views on your line manager. Do they inspire confidence and trust? Answer this months question and leave your comments on what you think needs to be done to improve this.

Your replies will be entirely anonymous.

Last month’s question

Last month we asked you for your views on what would most improve your experience of meetings here at Essex, and we received lots of great examples of what works well.

We have developed information on how to make use of technology including video-conferencing or Skype to remove the need for some meetings or to assist in sharing information beforehand to enhance the discussion at meetings. If you have a meeting room in your area used by staff members only, why not display this Meeting Room checklist poster of meeting etiquette?  We are planning to add sessions on ‘How to be an effective meeting Chair’ to the Learning and Development programme of events. Watch this space.

Our actions so far….

In response to the comments received from the previous months’ questions, as a reminder we have done/are doing the following:

  • We are developing training for Heads of Departments/Sections and HR Managers in conducting Stress Risk Assessments. These will then be carried out in all Departments/Sections during 2015-16.
  • We will be introducing electronic workflows for as many processes as possible by the end of 2015-16 to reduce the time spent by managers on HR-related administrative processes.
  • We have offered time management advice. Are you planning your time effectively and booking in your annual leave?
  • We will facilitate more opportunities for interaction between different groups of staff,  and encourage cross-functional and cross-disciplinary working, to increase understanding of different roles and the contribution they make to the University’s success.
  • We are reviewing all our work/life balance policies, which includes flexible working.
  • We are planning to add sessions on ‘How to be an effective meeting Chair’ to the Learning and Development programme of events.
  • Through the workload management project we will look at; merging the processes for gathering information for a number of University-wide activities (e.g. research plans and outcomes, annual review, appraisal) into one; building on the University’s Research Repository to extend information storage; implementing a new electronic document management system for storing personal information e.g. for annual review, which can be updated directly by individuals without the need for constant re-writing of applications.
  • We developed a range of suggestions not only to help you break up the day, but also to get some quiet time at work and to help you manage your email.
  • We have offered our Top 5 resources to help you build resilience at work.
