Don’t forget to sign your attendance sheet

A big thank you for everyone who took part in classroom tests of the new attendance monitors last month. The tests were successful so we’re now rolling out phase two, so keep an eye them because they will appear in lots more classrooms over next months. We will start using them next year so until then don’t forget to still sign in on your attendance sheets.

Sign up for 1:1 advice sessions

The University Skills Centre provides support and teaching in all aspects of academic skills development. It is open to all students, undergraduate and postgraduate, both for Colchester and Southend campuses. So if you have any problem related to your academic performance, you want to improve or just want to get an additional skill, contact the University Skills Centre.

Dilly Meyer, the Manager of the Skills Centre gave me a tour a few days ago. I was surprised in a good way to see the amount of resources they have in there:

  • Study Skills Workshops including assignment planning, essay writing, maths, stats or IT
  • 1:1 Academic Advisor Sessions
  • Academic English Support for students whose first language is not English

Colchester Campus also offers a Learning Resource Centre, a smaller library that has all sorts of books, dictionaries, textbooks, DVDs, guides. You also can sign up there for the 1:1 Academic Advisor sessions.

You can book all the sessions online and find more information by emailing them usc@essex.ac.uk or going straight to their offices:

You can talk to them at any stage of the writing process – from brainstorming through planning and drafting and re-drafting to final polishing.

Here’s what two students had to say last year…

“Just thought I would let you know that I graduated today with a 2:1…  With your help, my writing has greatly improved…”

“I am just e-mailing to thank you for your help in improving my essay writing skills.  I have finally managed to break the 70 mark barrier, and have received strong firsts in two papers since our meetings…”

To book a session; go to the LIFTS admin office, room 5A201, and book a slot in the green RLF folder.

Or call Emily or Geoff on 01206 872626.

Or e-mail Emily  on ebanks@essex.ac.uk or Geoff  growe@essex.ac.uk  and they’ll do their best to book you in.
