The first training session saw 28 Southend based students and 47 Colchester based students going green and learning how to encourage their peers to save energy and win prizes.

Student Switch Off is an energy-saving campaign running in the University of Essex halls of residence.  It uses social media and peer-to-peer communications to promote pro-environmental behaviour change.

Its aim is to reach all students by offering worthwhile incentives to change their behaviour. Regular prizes include Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, NUS extra cards, Lush goodies and club nights.

Energy-saving across the year is monitored and the hall that saves the most electricity is rewarded with a Ben & Jerry’s giveaway to celebrate.

The University of Essex will moderate comments and there will be a delay before any posts appear.

Student Switch Off is an energy-saving campaign running in the University of Essex halls of residence.  We use social media and peer-to-peer communications to promote pro-environmental behaviour change.

Our aim is to reach all students by offering worthwhile incentives to change their behaviour. Regular prizes include Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, NUS extra cards, Lush goodies and club nights.

We track the energy-saving across the year and the hall that saves the most electricity will be rewarded with a Ben & Jerry’s giveaway to celebrate.

We are looking for enthusiastic, environmentally-minded students to become Ambassadors for the campaign over the academic year 2013-14.  This is a voluntary role which requires one to two hours a week and we would love to hear from anyone who is interested.

Desirable qualities:

  • Interested in environmental issues
  • Confident speaking to new people
  • Competent with social media e.g. Facebook, Twitter
  • Experience of photography or making/editing videos

Your primary responsibilities (working in pairs within halls) would be:

  • Getting others to pledge to save energy with the campaign
  • Helping with stalls and events
  • Creating and sharing energy-saving photos or videos from your campus
  • Spreading the campaign message through halls using face-to-face visits, regularly updating the Facebook page and Twitter activity
  • Shaping the course of the campaign throughout the year (new ideas strongly encouraged!)

Skills you will gain:

  • Leadership
  • Communication
  • Presentation skills and public speaking
  • Time management
  • Event management
  • Problem solving

This is a fantastic chance to develop your skill base and make a difference on your campus. We will provide training and support throughout the year so that in the future you have a CV that stands out from the competition. Becoming an Ambassador will give you the opportunity to get more widely involved in various university and SU events, as well as the national Student Switch Off campaign.

To find out more and see what our Ambassadors have been up to, check out the Essex Student Swtich off Facebook page.

Training takes place 1-2pm 11 November in Colchester and 1-2pm 12 November in Southend. To apply, email ddempsey@essex.ac.uk
