Help us bring Beach Volleyball to Essex

Filed under: Colchester, News — ckeitch @ 10.47 am

Beach Volleyball (300 x 200)Beach Volleyball is now an established Olympic Sport and is one of the most fun, exciting and recreational activities played on countless beaches around the world. That’s why we’re trying to bring Beach Volleyball to the University of Essex.

The Sports Centre is currently looking for funding to have two Beach Volleyball courts built at the Colchester campus. These will be the first Beach Volleyball courts in North Essex and will offer a range of other sports to our community including beach fitness sessions, beach football, beach tennis, beach rugby and beach Frisbee.

We need to prove that we have the support of the University and local community to get this funding from Sport England. So if you’d like to see Beach Volleyball at the University of Essex, please show your support by signing our petition before 8 June.

You can also keep up to date with our campaign to bring Beach Volleyball to Essex on Facebook.

The University of Essex will moderate comments and there will be a delay before any posts appear.

Four  of our students have received awards from the Wivenhoe Bursary scheme.

The award goes to students who live in Wivenhoe and who have achieved outstanding academic performance, contributed to the village community and been involved in extra-curricular activities.

The Wivenhoe Bursary is made possible thanks to  the annual Wivenhoe Town and Gown fundraising dinner. The annual dinner was set up in 2005 at the instigation of the then Mayor and Mayoress of Wivenhoe, Tom Roberts and Dilly Meyer, Operations Manager of the University Talent Development Centre.

The dinner was held last year at The Nottage, Wivenhoe, and raised £2,000. This was split between the four successful applicants, who were:

  • Mona Becker – 1st year Theatre PhD
  • Nathan Derejko – 3rd year Law PhD
  • Rachel Langley – 1st year MSc Tropical Marine Biology
  • Catherine Lord – 2nd year MSc Speech and Language Therapy

The next annual Town and Gown dinner will take place on Friday 20 November 2015 at Wivenhoe House. For further details, please email alumni@essex.ac.uk.
