LGBT-newStudents and staff from the University have written a book about their LGBT+ experiences and stories.

The book – LGBT+ Perspectives – The University of Essex Reader – was compiled and edited by Dr Ilaria Boncori, from the Essex Pathways Department. It contains stories, experiences, narratives and subjects from all different people’s lives.

This book conveys different perspectives of gender identity and sexual orientation and can help to enlighten many people who feel uneducated on this topic, as well as help those who feel unsure about whom they are.

Dr Boncori explained: “This book offers a collection of different perspectives on LGBT+ matters written by University of Essex staff and students for all of us – students, teachers, parents, friends and workers. LGBT+ Perspectives includes personal experiences, research findings and professional stories that provide further insight on how gender identity and sexual orientation permeate our private and professional lives, with the aim to foster understanding and inclusion.”

LGBT+ Perspectives – The University of Essex Reader is available from the publishers Editoriale Scientifica and will soon be available on Amazon.

Essex graduate Tamoor Ali has been named as Role Model of the Year by Stonewall as part of the awards linked to the Stonewall Top 100 Employers 2015, the list of Britain’s most gay-friendly workplaces.

Tamoor, who now works as a Senior Commercial Analyst at BP, studied economics at Essex and served as Vice-President Academic and Welfare within the Students’ Union in 2004-05.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted to be given the Stonewall Role Model of the Year 2015 award. It’s great recognition for me and BP for the work that we have done on LGBT equality in the workplace. Leading the network group has given me the confidence to be an out authentic leader and build my network within BP. I hope this encourages others in the energy industry to take the lead in the LGBT space and make a long-term sustainable and meaningful difference.”

Tamoor’s success comes as the University was ranked in the top 50% of employers by Stonewall for its work to promote sexual orientation equality. Essex was ranked 194th out of 397 employers who submitted applications to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI).

This year is the first year the University has submitted an application and next year Essex is aiming to come in the top 100 which would represent further significant improvement in making our workplace more LGB-friendly.
