Apply for an autumn frontrunner now

We are now accepting staff applications for autumn frontrunner placements that start in either September or October 2014. Placements can run for a minimum of 10 weeks and a maximum of 25 weeks.  The earliest a placement can start is Monday 22 September and the latest it can finish is Friday 26 June.

Frontrunners is the University’s student placement scheme that offers students the opportunity to take part in meaningful work experience and training to enhance their employability skills. Placements can be based in departments and sections on campus. Students can work up to 10 hours per week and the funding will cover their wages.

Funding will be awarded for two different levels of placement:

frontrunners – Open to students that have little or no previous experience and have not previously undertaken a frontrunners placement.

frontrunners plus – Open to students that have some experience or have completed a previous frontrunner placement. The duties of the placement need to be at a higher level and can also include low level supervision of other frontrunners.

Priority will be given to frontrunner applications.

More information and details of how to apply are on the frontrunners website.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 5 March 2014 at 12pm (noon). If successful, the placement will be advertised to students from end of April/beginning of May.

Welcome Week: the action in pictures

welcome

A warm Welcome to all our new students

From Zorb balls to Spiderman via a handful of foam fingers, this year’s Welcome Week was a triumph of colourful fun across all three campuses.
In Colchester, students got their first taste of the Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall at the official Welcome Talks, packing out the lecture theatre and learning some important tips to surviving their first week. The squares were full of stalls including a street market while the Arts office entertained with everything from Mexican Morris dancing, to a giant campus map.
In Southend student teams took part in the Befriend Southend Challenge which took them around the town hunting for clues including spotting a familiar-looking Spiderman. Their challenge was rounded off at the Freshers’ Fair, which offered chicken and pizza to the hungry masses while they shopped around finding out about all the myriad clubs and societies on offer.
Our Loughton students have been getting stuck into their studies from the off. Having arrived a little earlier, they have been getting involved in their induction programmes and attending departmental talks.
A big shout also goes out to all our volunteers, helpers, student mentors, ambassadors, frontrunners and everyone who gave their time and energy to help make this one of the most vibrant and well attended Welcome Weeks ever.
See the evidence for yourself in our Welcome Week photos.

Skills boost for students

Student skills boostThe University Skills Centre is offering more one-to-one academic skills support for students thanks to the appointment of four new team members on the Frontrunner Plus in-house internships scheme. All four are postgraduate and research students from different disciplines, chosen for their own high levels of academic literacy skills and experience in mentoring.

Based in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) room 4.204 at our Colchester Campus, they will work alongside the existing team to offer support to students on all stages of academic essay and assignment preparation, including interpreting assignment questions, planning and structuring an essay, good practice in citation and referencing, and achieving good academic style.

Students can now book tutorials through the LRC Librarian, all of which last for 30 minutes and are free of charge.

The LRC is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and offers a small lending library and study area, available to all University students and staff.

Email: ialrc@essex.ac.uk to find out more and visit the University Skills Centre website and our Facebook page.
