This is the proposed design for the University’s newest development of 634 en-suite student bedrooms at the heart of our Colchester Campus.

Plans for the new student accommodation, on the Knowledge Gateway site, have been submitted to Colchester Borough Council.

With record numbers of students studying at Essex, the development – due to be completed for autumn 2017 – supports our 50 per cent growth plans. It will enable priority students, including first years and overseas students, to be housed on campus.

The University is working with development partner, Uliving, which currently manages our University Quays and Meadows accommodation, on the new multi-million pound project.

Two striking linear curved buildings are proposed, sitting in line with the existing trees on the site which is between Essex Business School and the Meadows accommodation.

Staff, students and members of the local community have been consulted on the proposed design.

Registrar Bryn Morris explained: “We have invested £200 million in developing new living and learning spaces on our campuses. The development of further student residences on our Colchester Campus is the next step in securing the future success of the University.”

It is hoped work will start on the site in spring 2016.

Easter improvements on our Colchester Campus

Colchester Campus

As part of the University’s ongoing investment to improve buildings on our Colchester Campus, and enhance our estate for those of us living, studying and working here, a number of building maintenance and improvement are now underway for around four weeks. These include:

1. Redecoration of LTB rooms 1-9.

2. Twelve seminar rooms being refurbished: 3.501, 6.106, 5B.105, 5B.124, 5B.126, 5B.202, 4.134, 4.137, 4.139, 4SB.5.3, 6.300, 5S.4.11. This work may cause some noise.

3. Concrete cleaning to the former UK Data Archive building. This will involve scaffolding, cleaning jet-washing windows. Therefore it may cause some disruption and there may be slight water penetration around window areas. Work will be monitored by a member of the Estates team. If you work in this area, please remove all items from window areas, including electrical equipment.

4. Refurbishment of disabled toilet at 4.354

5. Removal of steps leading from the Multi Media Centre/LTB/Students’ Union – these are currently closed off due to their condition – and will be removed. Included in this work is the removal and replacement of the retaining wall. Work will take approximately eight weeks. This work may cause some noise.

6. Replacement doors and new flooring at all levels on the Department of Mathematics staircase. Starting during the Easter break, the staircase will remain accessible while work is done. This work may cause some noise.

7. Installation of photovoltaic panels at the top of the new multi-decked car park. The car park will remain open during this time, with the front exit in use.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding as these important building improvement works get underway. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Estate Management by e-mail to: estates@essex.ac.uk
