This is the proposed design for the University’s newest development of 634 en-suite student bedrooms at the heart of our Colchester Campus.

Plans for the new student accommodation, on the Knowledge Gateway site, have been submitted to Colchester Borough Council.

With record numbers of students studying at Essex, the development – due to be completed for autumn 2017 – supports our 50 per cent growth plans. It will enable priority students, including first years and overseas students, to be housed on campus.

The University is working with development partner, Uliving, which currently manages our University Quays and Meadows accommodation, on the new multi-million pound project.

Two striking linear curved buildings are proposed, sitting in line with the existing trees on the site which is between Essex Business School and the Meadows accommodation.

Staff, students and members of the local community have been consulted on the proposed design.

Registrar Bryn Morris explained: “We have invested £200 million in developing new living and learning spaces on our campuses. The development of further student residences on our Colchester Campus is the next step in securing the future success of the University.”

It is hoped work will start on the site in spring 2016.

The University of Essex will moderate comments and there will be a delay before any posts appear.

Staff at our Colchester Campus are invited to comment on proposals to build 600 new student bedrooms on the Knowledge Gateway development.

The Meadows Phase 2 will support the University’s ambitious growth plans outlined in our Strategic Plan. The aim is for the new en-suite bedrooms to be ready for autumn 2017.

The University is working with development partner Uliving, which currently manages our University Quays and Meadows Phase 1 accommodation, to prepare plans to be submitted to Colchester Borough Council.

Before the plans are submitted members of staff, the Students’ Union and local residents are being consulted on the proposed designs. Two long curved buildings, running parallel to the trees, are proposed for the site, located between the current Meadows residences and the new Essex Business School building.

The staff consultation takes place in The Hexagon on Tuesday 15 September from 12 noon to 2pm, with the public consultation in the evening of 15 September from 6pm to 8pm.

Plans for the development will be on display, alongside our 50th anniversary Something Fierce exhibition which highlights how the architecture and people of the University have shaped the local area. Members of the development team will be on hand to answer questions and explain the plans. Further consultation with students is being planned after the start of the autumn term.

The University of Essex will moderate comments and there will be a delay before any posts appear.

University Quays

Ownership of our University Quays student accommodation transfers from the University to Uliving from 5 July. Uliving is also developing, and will be operating, The Meadows, the new accommodation for 650 students adjoining The Quays which opens for the autumn term.

The University will be working in partnership with Uliving, which will be providing the management, cleaning, caretaking and maintenance services for The Quays and The Meadows, to ensure our students continue to receive a high quality service. As agents for Uliving, the University will continue to market The Quays through its website, to allocate students to rooms and to collect rents.

As part of the transfer, Uliving will be making changes to some of the buildings. The Quays reception office will be relocated to the ground floor, Flat 1, of Matthews House 1 from 26 June.  The current reception/office area and the area where the former café was situated (Hawkins Houses 1 and 2) will subsequently be converted into thirteen new en-suite bedrooms.  This work will take place from 26 June until the end of August. In addition, kitchen refurbishments will be taking place in Sainty Quay.

The student common room space, currently provided in a temporary building, will close and students living at The Quays will be able to use the new social pavilion being developed at The Meadows from the end of September.

Uliving is a consortium made up of Bouygues Development and the not-for-profit housing provider Derwent Living.
