Photographic competition winner announced

A PhD student from the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies has won a photographic competition aimed at promoting equality and diversity with her striking photo of the hands of her internationally-diverse group of friends.

Fahmida Akhter’s work, entitled Us, took the top prize of £100 in the Equality and Diversity photographic competition which attracted more than 75 entries from staff and students across the University.

The top 12 entries, judged by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jules Pretty, will be used in a calendar aimed at promoting equality and diversity at Essex.

Competition runners-up were Sian Collins of the Albert Sloman Library (second prize) and Teresa Warren from the University Day Nursery (third prize).

One entrant who submitted a photo said: “I enjoyed taking the time to think about what equality and diversity meant to me, it felt empowering.”

To see the prize-winning photographs and the names of the other photographers whose photographs will be used for the calendar see the Equality and Diversity website.

The calendars will go on sale during Welcome Week in October 2013. To order one in advance, e-mail the Equality and Diversity team. Proceeds will be used to further promote equality and diversity at the University.
